The Flag Institute, the UK’s national vexillological association, recently polled its members regarding a change in the Union Jack if Scotland becomes independent.
Almost 65 per cent of respondents wanted to see a change.
And after the poll, suggested replacements for the flag flooded in.
We are not advocating changing the flag. We are not advising changing the flag. We are not encouraging a change to the flag. We are not discouraging a change to the flag, says Flag Institute CEO Charles Ashburner. We are simply here to facilitate and inform the debate if there is an appetite for such a thing. As this subject has generated the largest postbag in our history, however, there is clearly such an appetite.

The Union Flag should be changed now to show the correct blue colour as in the Scottish flag. The original Union Flag of 1606 (the King’s flag, King James of England and Scotland) displayed the lighter blue of the Scottish flag. The blue got darkened over the centuries by the Admiralty so flags would last longer. While this was frugal it was an insult to Scotland and should be corrected now.
I’d suggest the blue wasn’t so much darkened as enriched. this is because St Andrew got richer the more he worked with St George and St Patrick. this represents that all are richer together, and that Scotland whilst independent was not so strong in its culture, whereas when they had to repel English inroads they became stronger
