The Flag Institute William Crampton Library offers a unique research and documentation centre – the largest in the world outside the USA.
Located in Hull’s historic Museum Quarter, the collection comprises thousands of items:
- books on flags and flag-related topics
- vexillological journals from around the world
- images
- newspaper and magazine articles
- correspondence
- flag specifications
- original design work
- private research collections
- badges, ephemera, posters, wallcharts
- flags
and all items are available to view on site.
The William Crampton Library is professionally curated, catalogued and indexed. The library also boasts an active collection development programme. A regular literature review identifies new items for acquisition by exchange, donation, purchase or download.

The Flag Institute Librarian welcomes visitors and enquiries from individuals and organisations worldwide: Flag Institute members; fellow vexillologists; flagmakers; schools; academics; publishers; film, TV, theatre and other media companies; government – local and national; diplomatic services; community groups; sports clubs and governing bodies; historic houses; visitor attractions and many more.
