A Nordic cross of white on green. The origin of which is unclear, possibly coming from internet proposals in the late 1990s or early 2000s. The design has been well established in Barra over the last decade, being especially well utilised as a ‘Made in Barra’ symbol in local shops. The green colour can be seen to represent the MacNeils and the island’s close connection to Ireland as well as the Viking heritage as shown by the Nordic cross.
The involvement of the Flag Institute to support the registration was facilitated by Alasdair Allan MSP. Getting the design officially recognised was championed by local councillors Donald and Dolina Manford who arranged for a petition to be signed off by the community councils on the island.
