The final round of the New Zealand Flag referendum has begun, deciding whether the country will keep or change its current flag.
To usurp the current flag, Kyle Lockwood’s Silver Fern (Black, White and Blue) must win a simple head-to-head ballot, running from 3–24 March.
The challenger design narrowly won the first round of the New Zealand Flag referendum late last year, beating Lockwood’s red variant by 15,324 votes.

The latest Newshub and Reid Research opinion poll shows 70 per cent support for the existing national flag.

Those advocating change missed a trick. I would have chosen one of the designs that replaced the UJ with a Red fimbriated diagonal bar and flown it alongside the existing Flag for a trial period-say a year. Thereafter hold the Referendum. A new Flag would have had a much better chance of success with a gradual approach plus a design that did not entirely discard NZ’s link to the past. The proposed new design is a mess and i think New Zealanders will reject it for this reason as much as any affection for the old design
