Notes: | The Tywyn Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this Merioneth town. The field of yellow and blue represents Tywyn’s beach and sea, which attract many thousands of visitors each year. The wavy diagonal that divides the field is represents the breakwater. The emblems of a raven and a dolphin both face left, reflecting Tywyn’s situation on the west coast of Wales. The raven was the family crest of Victorian salt merchant and philanthropist John Corbett of Droitwich (1817—1901). From the mid 19th century onwards, Corbett lived part time in the area and his generosity benefited Tywyn in many ways. He funded the construction of the seafront promenade and of many buildings which he adorned with the Corbett raven. These buildings often survive today, and Tywyn locals have come to accept the raven as an emblem of their town. The dolphin naiant signifies the bottlenose dolphins that frequent the Tywyn coastline in summer. They use the shelter of Cardigan Bay to nurse their young, to the delight of locals and visitors alike. |
