The Association of British Counties has issued a press release regarding Historic County Flags Day.
The first Historic County Flags day will take place on Wednesday 23 July 2014.
The Flag Institute, which maintains the UK Flag Registry, is supporting this initiative.
So, too, is the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
Flag Institute CEO Charles Ashburner says:
‘In Great Britain, our most enduring tribal groupings are perhaps our traditional counties.
Rich in history, yet inclusive of all of parts of society, these areas … are enjoying an impressive resurgence.
Flags have been the ultimate symbols of identity throughout history and remain so today.
As the UK’s national vexillological organisation, the Flag Institute is working hard to support those wanting to establish their own county flags.
We are therefore delighted to endorse Historic County Flags Day.’
