The Flag Institute mourns the passing of Dr Whitney Smith on 17 November 2016, at the age of 76.

In 1962 Whitney Smith founded the Flag Research Center, in 1965 Flag Bulletin, and in 1967 the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA).

In 1969 he also helped to found the Fédération internationale des associations vexillologiques (FIAV).

He is the author of twenty-seven books on flags and heraldry, and in 1966 designed the national flag of Guyana.

    My grandfather, Azmash Beyene Zahlay, drew the first Eritrean flag of the federation in 1952. I was wanting to know about my grandfather’s legacy that seems to have been crossed out of the history.
