Aberdeenshire flag unveiling, Castle Fraser, 22 April 2023

The official Aberdeenshire flag has been unveiled at a ceremony at Castle Fraser on Saturday 22 April 2023.

Five students from two local primary schools contributed to the winning design and were there to hoist their flag.

Lord Lieutenant Sandy Manson, Communities Vexillologist Philip Tibbetts and scores of locals also attended the event.

Aberdeenshire is the seventh Scottish county to register its official flag in our UK Flag Registry.

A field of gold and purple evokes the local barley, whisky and heather-clad mountains.

A central white castle represents Aberdeenshire’s sobriquet, ‘Scotland’s Castle Country’.

Finally, a gold and purple crown symbolises Balmoral and the county’s royal links.

Eliana Irwin, Iris Main, Zara Sim and Meryn Wilson – from Newtonhill Primary School, near Stonehaven – devised the layout and colours. Meanwhile Tristan Davidson – from Elrick Primary School, Westhill – came up with the crown.
