FA Cup of Flags: Penkhull triumphs

A close-fought final to the inaugural FA Cup of Flags ended in triumph for Penkhull (Stoke-on-Trent).

Penkhull defeated 35 rivals to secure the proud title of most popular community flag in England and Wales.

After big-city Preston took an early lead, the villagers clawed their way back to take 52 per cent of the poll.

Their total of 6,000+ votes represented almost as many votes as Penkhull has people!

The flag in green, yellow and blue symbolises Penkhull’s crossroads, Spode pottery and landmark cockerel weathervane, as well as the village’s continuing rural character in the midst of the City of Stoke-on-Trent. It was designed during a local competition in 2018 and flies proudly in the centre of the village.

The Penkhull Flag now goes forward to compete for international honours with the Scottish, Welsh and All-Ireland cupholders.

Tywyn (Wales) and Ulster (All-Ireland) have already qualified.

The Scottish Cup of Flags follows on Twitter in the first week of June.
