Notes: | The Monmouthshire Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this historic Welsh county. The flag draws on the arms attributed by mediæval heralds to King Inyr of Gwent, the land that later became Monmouthshire. These arms appear in a number of local contexts. The Diocese of Monmouth, which covers the same area as Monmouthshire, includes them in its arms. So too do Monmouthshire County Council (from 1948) and Blaenau Gwent Council (since 1974). And they also appear in the shield of Monmouthshire County RFC, among other local organisations. Jason Saber formalised the colours of this traditional design. In particular he used a celestial blue to contrast more strongly with the black portion of the field. |
