| Notes: | The North Riding Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this historic riding of Yorkshire. A yellow-edged blue cross recalls the pattern of the arms borne by the North Riding Council (1928—74). It also evokes the arms (yellow stars on blue) attributed Saint Wilfrid, an important figure in the region’s early history. The cross appears on a green field. In combination the three colours reference the natual features of the North Riding. Green represents the wide expanse of the famed North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Blue and yellow reflect the North Sea coastline and rivers like the Swale, Tees and Esk. The rose represents Yorkshire and also featured on the coat of arms of the former North Riding Council. The Teesdale Mercury launched a design competition on 16 January 2013. A judging panel shortlisted six designs and a public vote selected the winner. |
