South Uist will have the first officially recognised community flag in the Outer Hebrides.
The design has entered the UK Flag Registry here.
It will also enter the official records of the Court of the Lord Lyon, which approves all flags in Scotland.
The flag is a white-edged blue Nordic cross on a green background, similar to the Norwegian flag.
Although of unknown origin, it greets arrivals at Lochboisdale Harbour and has flown widely on the island for at least fifteen years.
Donnie Steele championed local efforts to secure registration, securing the support of the island’s Community Councils.
Community landlord Stòras Uibhist provided funding, and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar were happy to second South Uist’s petition to the Lord Lyon.
Alasdair Allan MSP supported the work and invited Flag Institute Communities Vexillologist Philip Tibbetts to offer his experience and advice.
The island is planning a raising ceremony at the South Uist Games on Wednesday 19 July.
Following the example of Shetland, Orkney and Caithness, innovative use of the flag will enhance the local community and bring global recognition.
Barra is seeking recognition for its long-established flag, and Philip Tibbetts encourages other islands and communities to develop flags likewise.
