Notes: | The Wing Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this Buckinghamshire village. John Hall designed this flag originally in 1987. Its colours of blue and gold relate to the Dormer and the Rothschild families. The Dormers owned the manor of Wing from the 1400s until their descendant the Earl of Chesterfield disposed of it in 1840. Meanwhile the Rothschilds became prominent in the village in the mid 19th century and remain the major landowners in the area. The flag’s golden arch represents Wing’s Saxon element. The church is parish’s oldest surviving building and is one of the UK’s oldest churches. The falcon represents the Dormer family, who acted as Keeper of the King’s Falcons for several generations. This was an important role and brought them close to the royal family. The restored tombs of the Dormers remain in the church, and the falcon is visible at the foot of the tomb of Sir William Dormer. |
